By the end of 2023, the MTA will complete the phasing out of MetroCards in favor of OMNY, a system which overhauls the New York City public transit system’s payment technology. Standing for “One Metro New York,” OMNY will unite fare payments across all transit systems in New York City. Contactless payments through the OMNY system are already available in all MTA subways and buses, but the MTA is now introducing the OMNY card, which links directly to an app that charges a user’s debit or credit card. Now available in stores and, in the future, vending machines, the card costs $5 with a minimum of $1 that must be loaded onto it at the time of sale. This, of course, makes the OMNY card more expensive than the Metrocard, which sells for $1.
