Awn celebrates with students after the ceremony.

Former General Studies Dean Peter Awn passed away on Sunday evening. Throughout his 20-year deanship, Awn helped transform GS into the school it is today. Under his tenure, the school increasingly integrated into Columbia undergraduate life, saw an exponential rise in the number of student veterans, and provided an education increasingly on par with the academic rigor of Columbia College.

A leader, mentor, professor, and friend to countless people in the Columbia community, Awn aimed to ensure that larger GS community was not only heard but respected and valued as one of Columbia’s undergraduate colleges.

To help tell the story of Awn’s impact on Columbia, we invite you to share with us your favorite memory of the Dean. If you feel comfortable, you can also email us any photos or screenshots you have with Dean Awn to accompany your memory to
